For the past 50 years, fathers and mothers in Sweden have been able to take parental leave, allowing them to care for their children instead of working, looking for work, or studying. The parental insurance system is a reform that has put Sweden on the world map, enabling parents to combine child care with a career and a place in the labor market. It has also paved the path for more equal parenting. TCO, The Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the parental insurance system with a documentary about its history — what has really happened over the past 50 years, and what do we need to do to ensure that parental insurance continues to be a driving force for increased gender equality?
